Description

Hunt's gap road, hills and M3

The film "At the Front" was made for the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1942 and most of the shots were by John Ford. This is a frame from a pan that shows an American troop carrier travelling eastward in the Hunt's Gap pass. Three months later, Kampfgruppe Lang would follow this route during Operation Ochsenkopf.

This model of the terrain is from Google Earth. Although the 1942 road no longer exists, its route can be seen at some times of the year thanks to discolouration of the ground. We can find the place where John Ford's camera was placed, beside a farm track.

A few seconds later, another frame from the same scene shows the vehicle in detail. During Operation Ochsenkopf, a German photographer would capture the recovery of a Tiger tank only 500 meters from this spot.
