Aspects of the event
Description
The Allied landings on the beaches of Sicily began on the night of 9/10 July 1943. The Hermann Göring division set out to attack the beaches, strengthened by a company of Tigers from the 504 battalion which they had used political connections to acquire. They sent a Western Battle Group south through Niscemi, but they were stopped at a road junction by American paratroops. Some Tigers were lost and the battle group had to try a different route the following day.
