Thumbnail image: Tiger abandoned at Priolo

Description

This road is the Strada Provinciale 11, south of Niscemi, Sicily. We are facing south towards the beaches near Gela where American forces landed before dawn on 10 July 1943.

The Hermann Göring Paratroop Panzer Division sent a "Western battle group" along this road to attack them. But American paratroops had landed in the small hours, cutting German communications and capturing the hill and "Y" junction visible in the distance. The blocked the battle group on this road, destroying some Tigers. One Tiger can be seen to the right of this photo; it's not clear whether it was knocked out or broke down here. A close examination shows a second Tiger that is known from other photos.
