Description
We can identify this Tunisian Tiger as number "11", thanks to its damaged right mudguard, its tilted left headlight, and the position of the shovel clamps on its glacis. We have photos of this Tiger on various dates; because it has no repair patches in this photo, it's before mid-January 1943.
Djebel Maïana is visible in the distance. In front of the hill we can see the "X" sign of a railway level crossing.
Combining that with the trees and farms, the location can be found precisely.
When the Germans assaulted Tebourba there were only four Tigers in Africa, and as the company command tank, Tiger "11" was their leader. Two successive commanders of this Tiger, Hauptmann von Nolde and Oberleutnant Deichmann, were killed on the day the Tigers joined the battle, 1 December 1942. Three of the Tigers broke down. This photo shows "11" being towed away from the area, presumably in the aftermath of the assault.
This 1935 map proves that the place then had roads and buildings compatible with the photo. The Tiger's position is marked.
