Description
This American newsreel film, made in colour in 1942, shows a troop carrier driving through the Hunt's Gap valley. The date may be 24 November 1942, when the 1st Battalion of the 1st. U.S. Armoured Regiment used this route, heading to Tebourba.
The hills on both sides of this road are obviously impassable to vehicles. Three months later Kampfgruppe Lang used the same route during Operation Ochsenkopf, and the impossibility of leaving this valley to execute a flanking manoeuvre contributed to the failure of that mission.
Only 500 meters from this spot, a German photographer saw Tiger 813 being towed away from the battle that ended Operation Ochsenkopf.
This model of the terrain is from Google Earth, using satellite photos. The road that existed in 1942 is now erased and replaced by a highway, but the discolouration of the bare earth shows the old route. The camera's location is probably in this farm driveway that still exists. Djebel Munchar, 9km in the distance, can be seen in the film.
