Description
Tiger 02 has debarked from a ferry at the seaplane port of Karouba near Bizerte, Tunisia. The Tiger is still laden with gear that was stored on top of it during the voyage. Behind Tiger 02 we can see an aircraft hangar, a crane and another Tiger.
The digits "02" are very visible, and even this watermarked scan of the photo is clear enough to suggest that they're filled with a lighter colour than their surrounds. This effect can be seen on one other Tiger of this unit.
The Tiger in the distance is the rarely-photographed "213" of the 2nd company. That company arrived piecemeal from Italy during December 1942 and did not move to Tunis to report for action until early January 1943 [1, see pp. 41-42] . That tells us the likely era of this photo.
The wheels and tracks of Tiger 02 are in "transport" configuration. Usually seen during rail travel, this configuration was necessary to fit the Tiger into a Marinefährprahm. The outer road wheels are piled on the forward hull. The turret is locked in the reverse position. Some of the side skirts lie on the ground near the Tiger.
