Scale: 1 / 35
This article concerns a model kit that is not yet on general release. More information will be added as and when it becomes available.
The kit's subject
This kit builds the "command" variant of the Early Tiger I. A small number of decal options are provided, but the focus is on a specific vehicle, numbered "S04", that was used by Michael Wittman. This tank was issued to his unit in Italy in late 1943, when they were re-equipped with fresh Tigers following the battle of Kursk. They returned to the Eastern front, and in early 1944 a well-known set of publicity photographs were taken of Wittman and his crew; they posed in front of "S04".
Options in the build
It seems that a standard Tiger, as well as a Command Tiger, can be built from this kit, though all of the decals are for the Command version. The hull roof is designed for both types. To build the Command version you are obliged to scrape off the base mounts of an S-mine launcher that are molded into the plastic.
Tigers built in the period January 1943 - July 1943 can be built, that is, from the introduction of S-mines to the end of "Early Tiger" production.
What are Command Tigers
Panzer units had "command" vehicles that accompanied them into action. For convenience and concealment, these vehicles were built on the same chassis as the tanks. At first they had no main gun, but in the latter half of the war the large Panzers could carry the "command" radio equipment while retaining the main gun. The "command" version of the Tiger I is one example. Only a small number of changes, and the use of extra antennas, differentiate a "command" Tiger from a normal one as seen from outside.
