Aspects of the event

Description

In late June 1944, s.Pz.Abt. 504 retreated northwards from the area of Massa Marittima. Their new Tigers were prone to breakdowns and these winding hill roads proved too much for the heavy tanks. There was much towing by recovery tractors and little time for repairs.

The battalion had just lost three Tigers in battle. Now the 100km retreat to Pontedera would claim many more of the tanks, such as the ones abandoned near Saline.

Their first losses on this journey were dumped at the Larderello bridge on the 25th. Two days later, an American newsreel crew filmed the two wrecked Tigers.
