Building S04

To the home page

For an accurate build of Wittman's Tiger "S04", you will need some parts not provided in this kit. One good source is the Rye Field kit "Tiger 1 Late Production", which has the parts and doesn't always need them.

However, it is only practical to build an exterior version of "S04". The interior of this Tiger had significant differences from Rye Field's kit, and its layout is not fully known.

Mantlet on RFM Tiger S04

This kit has an opening in the mantlet for an MG. But the real Tiger "S04", in the right-hand photo, had no opening there. It should be closed up.

Antenna on RFM Tiger turret

Tiger "S04" had an antenna on its turret roof. The kit instructions say nothing about this. The parts are on the "O" sprue because other kits use them, as shown here. But you will have to drill a hole in this kit's roof.

Antenna on RFM Tiger hull

Tiger "S04" had an antenna on its left-side hull roof. The kit instructions don't mention it. The necessary parts are on the "D" sprue, but you must drill the hole.

Features of Command Tiger

Like all Command Tigers, "S04" had small additional features on its right side. None of these are provided in Rye Field's "Wittman Early" kit, but they can be spared from the "Late Tiger" kit.

Antenna pot on Command Tiger

Command Tigers like "S04" had a large shielded insulator for the Fu 8 antenna. In Rye Field's "Late" kit it's part Z32, but the part is not provided in this "Wittman Early" kit. The instructions show only part D41 here. As well as obtaining the part, you will need to drill a large hole.

Headlights for S04

This kit's instructions tell you to use no headlight parts for Tiger "S04". But in fact, "S04" had two headlights just like any other Early Tiger. You should assemble the headlights as shown on Page 25. When Wittmann was photographed with this tank, the headlights were stored inside it; but even then, you must use parts D39 and F4/F5.
