Wrong side skirts

To the home page

This kit represents the Tigers that equipped the famous 503 battalion when it was created. They got nineteen Tigers with a Panzer III turret bin. Some of them had an escape hatch, others not. But all of them had a version of side skirting that I call "type 2".

These "type 2" skirts, like "type 1", come in two lengths, have no reinforcements underneath, and do not form an exact straight line on the tank. Full specifications are in an article about Tiger side skirts.

Rye Field have given this kit the later "type 3" skirts. They differ in all three of the aspects that I listed. It is not practical to convert one type to the other; their mounting points on the hull wall would have to be moved and the joints between skirt segments would have to be filled and rescribed. It would be much simpler to use aftermarket parts or take parts from other kits (if they will fit). At time of writing this, only one single kit contains "type 2" skirting.

Type 2 skirts

This is the type of Tiger that the kit is intended for. The small turret bin and the forward-slanted hull front are correctly provided by Rye Field. But they have not promised us the unusual side skirting that I point out, although it affects the whole "look" of the vehicle.

It's possible that Rye Field will repair the skirting problem before the release of the kit. I will update this review when new information becomes available.
