Aspects of the event
In late June 1944, s.Pz.Abt. 504 retreated northwards from the area of Massa Marittima. Many Tigers broke down on the hill roads and there was much towing by recovery vehicles. On the 25th, at the Larderello bridge, it was necessary to dump a pair of Tigers.
The battalion had just lost three Tigers in battle. But now, the retreat to Pontedera over 100 km of mountain roads was beginning to kill Tigers also. It would eat up many more tanks, such as the two left near Saline.
Two days later, an American camera crew filmed a newsreel of the two wrecked Tigers.
