Description
Tiger 01 belonged to the command staff of s.Pz.Abt.501, but it's stated that it was not a Befehlstiger because those had not yet gone into production. Looking at the wreckage of the exploded tank, we can confirm that this is so. The inner side of the hull wall, beside the radio operator, is visible now, and the welded mounts on it are laid out for the standard load of MG34 ammunition. A Befehlstiger would have a different layout here.
Other details exposed by the explosion include the firewall with its ventilation holes, and the electrical junction box that has been torn out of the turret.
It is helpful that this photo was annotated on its back, "Tiger near Longstop Hill". But we can't easily interpret what "near" means.
