Thumbnail image: Early Tiger in Cisterna

Description

Tigers of s.Pz.Abt. 508 drive through the ruins of Cisterna in 1944, on the Via Giovane Europa. The lead Tiger, visible in the prior photo, is a "Mid" but the one close to us is an "Early". Its S-mine launchers are installed. Its jack is missing and the starter handle is stored in its place. This Tiger appears again in the following photo.

Why would the s.Pz.Abt.508, which was outfitted in December 1943, possess an "Early" Tiger? One possibility is that it's a rebuilt Befehlstiger. But we can rule this out because its antenna is on the right-hand side, and there is no holder for the mast antenna on the hull side. This can only be a former member of Schwere Panzerkompanie Meyer.
