Description
This photo shows the so-called "Bergetiger" found in Italy and reveals much about its origins.
There is a small square of weld on the right turret wall, with a tiny hole below it. This proves that the tank was once a Borgward controller. This variant of the Tiger had an extra radio in the turret and an antenna base here. We can also conclude that this Tiger, which was in s.Pz.Abt. 508, belonged to the third company, which operated the Borgward vehicles.
On the rear of the tank, low down between the exhausts, there is a towing hitch. This is not a standard Tiger part and it must have been added by the unit workshop. It is part of the evidence that this tank was converted for the "Bergetiger" role.
The photo also shows us that; the frame added to the rear wall for holding jerrycans, did not incorporate or use the toolbox holder; the unexplained bar added to the left hull, was a pipe with a flanged end; Zimmerit was burnt off almost all of the turret's right side; and the jib added to the turret could be locked in the horizontal position.
