Description
A group of New Zealand troops sit on the gun barrel of a Late Tiger in Italy. This Tiger was apparently abandoned and burnt out by the Germans when they retreated on 3 August 1944. It is beside the wall of the Villa Sfacciata. The wall survived into modern times and we can match its individual bricks to modern photos, giving us the location of this tank, from which we can link it to battle reports.
Track links are carried on the front wall of the Tiger's hull, including two above the driver's visor. The extreme brightness contrast on the mantlet is evidence of a fire. The loader's hatch handle is offset, implying that this tank has the 40mm turret roof.
