Description
On the morning of 4 August 1944, New Zealander troops advanced to the Villa Sfacciata in the Tuscan hills. At the entrance to the villa they found a Sherman of the 20th Armoured Regiment, a casualty of the previous day; and a Tiger, probably responsible for knocking out the Sherman. This and another Tiger had been left on the road and apparently burnt out by their own crews. They may have lacked fuel to retreat.
The photo's location was found by C. Brown thanks to the hill in the distance. Only two stretches of road are aligned with that hill, and only one of them sees a flat horizon to its left.
The precise spot can then be identified by the individual bricks in the 1944 wall which still existed as of 2016.
