Description
It is summer 1943 and these German troops are posing beside the remains of a Tiger. The tank hit a mine on 11 February 1943 and has been here for months. Its whitewash is dissolving and its tactical number "831" is barely visible now, though the cross and the symbol of the "Das Reich" division have survived on the rear wall.
This photo shows clearly that the tank's turret is partially detached from its hull, implying that the Germans exploded it before they were forced to quit the city on 12 February.
The wreck can be placed on this 1941 reconnaissance photo. The houses across the street are visible on the photo, including the house at [4]. On the photo, this house has a factory chimney behind it; a yellow line here goes directly to that chimney.
