Description
This is Karouba near Bizerte in Tunisia. It is an airport for seaplanes, built by the French colonial administration. The large building with the curved roof is one of the aircraft hangars. The airport fronts onto Karouba Bay for the benefit of the seaplanes; at the right of the photo we can glimpse a crane capable of lifting aircraft out of the water.
Because the waterfront was low and convenient for Marinefährprahm, most of the Tigers sent to Tunisia were landed here. At the left we can see the nose of a Tiger. But the subject of the photo is given by the comment written on the back; "Hier waren Bomben bei der Arbeit!". The ground has been torn up by Allied bombs.
This is a part of the Karouba airport. The photographer is at [1], the crane is at [2] and the hangar is near the middle of the photo.
