Description
This 25pdr is No. 1 gun of F troop, 155th Field Battery, Royal Artillery, commanded by Sergeant Henderson at the battle of Sidi N'sir on 26 February 1943. The photo was taken shortly after the battle. This gun was assigned to the anti-tank role. It was sited where the road to Mateur rounds a gentle hill, and placed only 20 or 30 meters below the road. Enemy tanks would therefore crest the rise and come into sight of this gun when they were already quite close to it. The other 3 guns of "F" troop were sited further back and assigned to the artillery role; "E" troop was behind them again. This gun fought German tanks at close quarters and knocked out several of them, even halting a Tiger that led the final German charge. After hours of battle, a direct hit killed the entire crew.
Another photo of Gun No. 1, F Troop shows it in more detail.
