Tiger 111 near Saline

Tiger "111" of s.Pz.Abt.504 is a mechanical casualty of the retreat to Pontedera. It was abandoned here, after apparent efforts to tow it, on 30 June 1944. The village of Saline lies beyond the hills in the distance. The 504 battalion reported 22 Tigers lost on this 60km journey through the hills. Even allowing that some of them were casualties of the battles of the prior weeks, counted as losses only when finally abandoned, this is a shocking figure and it suggests that "Late" Tigers had serious reliability problems.
