Description

The 504th heavy tank battalion were obliged to retreat through the Italian hills at the end of June 1944, as American forces overwhelmed the area around Massa Marittima. The 60km journey cost them a shocking 22 Tigers, either broken down on the road or stuck, damaged but repairable, on the battlefields.

This is Tiger "111" and it has come only as far as the town of Volterra, visible on a hilltop 5km in the distance. Its turret is rotated, not in order to fight (there are only hills to its left), but to allow its engine hatch to be opened, which tells us something about why it could travel no further. Spare tracks have not been salvaged from the Tiger but two broken hatches suggest that explosives were used to render it unusuable.
