Description
On 14 February 1943, Gruppe Reimann of the 10 Panzer Division attacked the American front line near Sidi bou Zid. Six Tigers of the 1st company of s.Pz.Abt.501 accompanied them. They battled the 1st Armored’s 3rd Battalion on an open plain.
This photo was taken during the battle, apparently from within a Tiger. The photographer wrote "A Sherman explodes when hit by the 8.8cm shell of a Tiger's gun".
In the background we can see Djebel Lessouda, held by the 168th Infantry’s 2nd Battalion who were surrounded and unable to help the Shermans. Somewhere at the base of that mountain, a platoon of 88mm guns supported the Panzers.
