Thumbnail image: Tiger 81 and prisoners from Sidi N'sir

Description

The horizon in this photo is recognisable and tells us where we are; this is Operation Ochsenkopf and we're in the hills above Sidi N'sir. British prisoners are being taken back to German-held territory on a Pz.3, therefore it's the 27th February 1943. Kampfgruppe Lang is moving towards the railway station, which lies about 4km ahead of this spot. Its leading elements got past the British gun positions after defeating them on the 26th, but then the whole convoy had to stop for the night in torrential rain.

At the right we see a Tiger. This is the commander's tank of the 8th company, numbered "81". It survived the war and ended up in American museums. But today it is in command of 6 other Tigers, and it will soon lose 4 of them in the Hunt's Gap battle.
