Description

The condition of Tiger 142 suggests that this is Operation Ochsenkopf. The torrential rain began on the 26th February, and the Tigers had to cross deep mud to reach Sidi N'sir. A pause for repairs, like this, could take place only after the battle. This may be the 27th, the day after the battle, when the German attack made little progress.

Tree south of Sidi N'sir

The entire landscape between Mateur and Hunt's Gap was almost devoid of trees, so it is not unreasonable to identify the tree in the photo as the same one that still stands by a farm about 1 km southwest of the Sidi N'sir station. An eyewitness account of the battle describes German tanks parked along this road on the night of the 26th.
