Tiger 01 leaving Reggio Calabria

Tiger 01, one of the officer staff tanks of s.Pz.Abt.501, is leaving Reggio Calabria in Italy for the voyage to Tunisia. It has descended a shallow ramp from the city's famous promenade, to the left of the photo, where an audience has gathered. The tank is turning into a railway level crossing that leads to the beach.

This photo of the promenade dates from about 20 years before, but little has changed. I have drawn the route that "01" and other Tigers took in order to reach the water's edge. It was necessary, after crossing the railway tracks, to drive 100 meters past some structures. There exists a photo of Tiger "142" doing exactly that.
