Aspects of the event

Description

There were two missions called "Eilbote", starting on the 18th and the 31st January 1943. Since the 1st company of s.Pz.Abt. 501 travelled some of the same roads on both occasions, it is difficult to know whether a given photograph depicts "Eilbote 1" or "Eilbote 2".

The photos show the Tigers crossing Tunisia's dorsal range via the road from the Kébir reservoir to the Hir Moussa junction. They have paused for a discussion at the highest point of the road, by Djebel Nassir.

Halting point of Kampfgruppe Lüder

This simulated landscape shows where the photographer stood (arrowed). From here, the road leads downhill to the Hir Moussa junction (referred to by the Germans as "point 19") and the wide valley leading to Qusseltia, the ultimate target of the operation.
