The Tiger had large air inlets on its forward engine deck, protected by a grille and a mesh screen. They were a weak point in the design, because artillery explosions above the deck could send shrapnel down into the inlets, where it could damage the radiators.
This weakness was not addressed until April 1944. Wooden decking was installed in the ducts to catch the shards. This model shows the decking installed in an inlet duct.
Takom's kit does not provide this decking, although the ducts and radiators are in the kit. The later versions of "Late" Tiger would all have it, including all those with the monocular gunsight.
