Crane sockets

To the home page

The final version of Tiger had three crane sockets added to the turret roof. These were simple metal cylinders, each with a threaded hole.

Pilze

This is such a socket on the roof of the Saumur museum Tiger. Note that the hatch hinges, behind it, are countersunk into the roof like the entire loader's hatch. It was originally designed for a roof 25mm thick, but the final Tigers had a 40mm thick roof panel.

Takom Pilze

Here is the corresponding area on Takom's Late Tiger. The socket doesn't look right. It could be improved by filling it, e.g. with putty, and then drilling a hole of the correct diameter.

Note also that the hinges on Takom's hatch are not countersunk like the real ones. It may be possible to scribe a narrow trench around them.
