This kit's subject is one specific Tiger. The kit includes two sets of decals, intended to represent that tank at two distinct times. But the decals do not exactly match the Tiger's real markings.
Photographs of this Tiger are few. We can see it early in 1944, whitewashed for the winter. At this time, it is not Otto Carius' Tiger. He still has his old 1943 Tiger.
Other photographs show this Tiger in Summer 1944, with Otto Carius standing in the cupola. This scene was captured on newsreel, and the visit of the cameraman is mentioned in Otto Carius' memoirs.
Winter markings
When this Tiger was painted white, it bore the number "217" on its turret and Balkenkreuz on its sides. These crosses were apparently painted before the whitewash was applied, so they are partially obscured.
Takom provides the number "217" in black, and the crosses. But Takom's crosses are completely black. They do not match the crosses on the real tank, which are black with white surrounds
Summer markings
When this Tiger was commanded by Otto Carius, it was painted in subdued camouflage. In the photographs, there is no number on it.
Takom provide the number "217", in red digits, and they tell you to apply it to this build of the tank. It's possible that the Tiger did bear this number in the summer, but not on the day of the photographs.
The crosses provided for this scheme are black with white surrounds, which is correct, but they are undersized. In fact, these crosses are a better match to the Winter ones.
