Decal option 221

To the home page

This kit has decals for a Tiger marked "221". It belonged to the 505th heavy tank battalion. Takom mistakenly assign it to an imaginary "schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung".

We have several photographs of the real "221", taken at different times. In the earlier ones it has a subtle, medium dark colour; probably it is painted with the first "tropical" colours. In later photographs it seems to have a typical multicolour scheme, which the kit's painting guide suggests to apply.

"221" has a custom-built extension added to its turret bin. We do not have photographs of this box' top surface, therefore any model kit, including this one, must be speculative there.

Choice of optional parts

The correct sprocket hub for this Tiger is very probably Y2-13.

This Tiger had the vertical adapter tool (part D2-4).

In all of the photographs, Tiger "221" has the complete Feifel filter system installed. It was equipped with the later type (parts U2-21, U2-35).

Tiger "221" had the standard side skirts with end panels.

The best front wall for this Tiger is part C2-7.

Tiger "221" had spare tracks held by a bar across the lower nose. Part U2-1 is best for this.

We don't know which of the kit's two engine hatches is appropriate for "221". Given the time of its construction, they are both possible.

Tiger "221" did not have a turret periscope (parts L2-2, E2-61).

The most accurate mantlet part is T2-14.

In every photograph of Tiger "221", all of the outermost road wheels are installed. The crew don't seem to have had the habit of removing the front wheel.
