This kit has decals for a Tiger marked "212". It belonged to the 502nd heavy tank battalion in 1944. We have photographs from a single day showing it painted in whitewash.
This is an unusual Tiger. It was built as the Command version, but was then factory-converted to the standard version. Some of its Command fittings were left in place. In particular, the antenna positions on the turret roof and on the right-hand hull side were eliminated and (as far as we know) sealed off with metal discs. The kit must be modified a little to recreate all of this.
Antenna modifications
Tiger "212" had its antenna on the left hull side. You must modify the kit's hull roof (part D2-15) to match. Sand off the two molded bars in this photo (but leave them alone for all other decal options, regardless of what the assembly guide says). Drill open the small hole that is on the underside at the same spot. Then fix the antenna base (part E-42) into this hole, again ignoring what the instructions say.
Over on the right-hand side of the hull roof, there is a larger round indentation on the underside. This represents the Fu 8 antenna holder that was blanked off for Tiger "212". You need not open this hole; simply make a thin disc of this size and fix it to the top side of the roof in exactly this location, referring to the photograph.
On the underside of the turret roof (part D2-11) there is a locator hole. You should put a tiny flat disc on the upper side of the roof, at exactly this spot. It should be the same size as the antenna base (part U10) that was there when Tiger "212" was originally built.
Command fittings
Tiger "212" originally had a storage tube on its rear wall. This kit has a part to represent it (part U2-39). The tube was removed before the tank left the factory, but four small attachment blocks remained on the wall. They are not provided in this kit; you could improve the accuracy of your "212" model by adding them. Use part U2-39 as a reference for their locations.
On the right-hand side of the hull, there were a few features specific to Command Tigers, still in place. This photo shows the disc that blanks off the antenna position. Ahead of it, to the right of this photo, there are two small items; the kit includes them as parts J16 and J19, and the hull roof has a faint moulded outline on it where they should be fixed. At the edge of the roof there is a clamp with a lever, intended to hold a large antenna shaft. The kit has part J15 for this. Below it, on the side wall, is a welded cup that the antenna would sit in. For this you have part J17.
Choice of optional parts
The correct sprocket wheel part for this Tiger seems to be part E1, although it is not mentioned in the assembly guide.
This Tiger had the vertical adapter tool (part D2-4).
This Tiger was operating in winter conditions and there was apparently not a problem with dust. The Feifel filters were not installed. But the main duct (part U2-3) was retained on the engine hatch for convenience. The kit offers you an alternative, part H13, but these Tigers probably didn't even have it issued to them.
Tiger "212" was provided with the standard side skirts with end panels. But in the photographs of this tank, the side skirts are not installed. Judging by how uniformly the whitewash is applied to the side walls (parts C2-6, C2-8), this crew didn't use their skirting in Winter 1943-44. The kit's painting guide is wrong here.
The best front wall for this Tiger is part C2-7. But it's very likely that the bolts beside the MG were not present. You should fill the tiny holes there.
The correct rear mudflaps for Tiger "212" are parts H11 and H12, although they are not mentioned in the assembly guide.
Although the relevant photo is not clear, it seems that Tiger "212" had no spare tracks or other additional storage at the front.
The correct engine hatch for this Tiger is part C2-9. The correct outlet grilles are H-20 through H-23, although the instructions do not mention them.
Tiger "212" must have had a turret periscope (parts L2-2, E2-61), although no photographs show it.
The most accurate mantlet part is probably T2-13, but we have no clear photograph of it. The turret bin is the standard one (part U1).
