About this detail of the Tiger
When the second type of cupola was introduced to the Tiger (July 1943, from hull #391) it had no provision for the 'Scherenfernrohr' observation scope. The hinged arm of the original cupola was dropped from the new design [3] .
In May 1944, a new support for the scope was added to the Tiger E [1] and was also used in the Tiger B. There was apparently a stowage position for the scope itself, under the roof to the left front of the commander; but I have seen no evidence of it.
This new support was on the hull roof ahead and slightly to the right of the cupola. It collided with one of the commander's grab handles, which was then dropped from the Tiger's design.
I have never seen German drawings of the support. There is a surviving incomplete support in the 'Saumur' vehicle. It comprises a small U-shaped frame welded to the bottom edge of the cupola, and a long metal bar welded to the roof.
The long bar has a slot, presumably to trap the movable periscope holder.
The whole assembly is placed halfway between two of the periscopes.
