About this detail of the Tiger
Most of the Tiger's 88mm ammunition was stored in the sponsons above the wheels. There were 4 compartments in each sponson, and the middle two were equipped to store 16 rounds of ammunition each, making 64 rounds. Another 6 were stored in the left sponson beside the driver. The remainder were at floor level.
This is inside the Tiger at Saumur museum. We are looking at the front left-hand ammunition compartment. Each compartment had a sheet-metal door, protecting it from shrapnel only. The door was made of 4 segments and was attached to the roof; on release, it would quickly fold down. Thanks to being folded, this door has preserved some of this Tiger's original Ivory paint.
In this photo, both of the right-hand doors have been released from the roof, and have partially folded. The racks for the 16 rounds of ammunition can be seen inside the compartments.
