Two kinds of track
The first Tigers (subjects of this model kit) were built with "mirrored" tracks; a left-side track, and a right-side track.
After operating the tanks for a while, crews apparently decided that life would be simpler with only one kind of track per vehicle. They swapped tracks around, giving some of their Tigers only a single kind of track. This idea was communicated back to the factory, which subsequently manufactured only one type of track (the one designed for the left side).
Tracks on specific Tigers
When building a model kit of an "initial" Tiger at Leningrad, you are faced with the question; what kind of tracks did it carry in the period that I will depict?
Tiger "100" always wore its original "mirrored" tracks, even when displayed in Soviet captivity. Two short lengths of spare track were stored on its lower front; one of each type.
Tiger "123" must have been painted grey at first, but we have only photographs from later, in winter snow, when it had a whitewash camouflage scheme. And at that time it carried its original "mirrored" tracks.
Tiger "3" was originally numbered "122" but it wore the number "3" in early 1943, along with an impressive camouflage pattern. Its tracks at that time were both of the "left" type, i.e. the standard configuration of all Tigers for many months to come.
