About this detail of the Tiger
The real VK3001 project got cancelled before a turret was built. We now have only a single surviving diagram of the designer's turret concept. Here it is; it shows only the major features of the turret.
In the absence of complete turret diagrams, Hobby Boss have given this kit the turret of a later tank, the VK4501. The two tanks are related and very similar. But I don't believe they would have had identical turrets.
The VK4501 had thicker armour than planned for the VK3001. The pistol ports and vision ports of the two tanks may have been slightly different. And, most likely, the cupolas would have been very different.
The VK4501's thick armour obliged its designers to make a solid cupola, which was eventually used on the "Early" Tiger E. That's what the kit provides. But the VK3001 was intended to have thinner armour. The designers would probably have given it a typical German cupola with moving armour blocks. This diagram shows their first sketch of a turret for the VK3001; notice the type of cupola that they were planning.
It would probably improve this kit's accuracy to remove its solid cupola and attach one from a Pz.3 or Pz.4 kit, choosing a version that has 50mm armour.
