U-beams
The central compartment of the Tiger's hull had ammunition boxes on the side walls and a false floor with storage under it. All of this was supported by a pair of U-beams.
This image of a beam and a bracket is taken from a manual [2, see Tafel 4] .
Each beam was supported by a welded flange on the firewall and two solid brackets bolted to the side walls. This model places them in a simplified hull.
This is how the beam stands in relation to the hull walls.
By my own calculations, there would have been a tiny clearance between the turret floor and these beams (see the diagram) if everything were precisely as designed. But in practice, such items were usually several millimeters out of place. The turret floor was adjustable for height, therefore collisions could be prevented.
The brackets were bolted to welded plates on the walls.
The front end of each beam was hidden by a sheet-metal cover. This is the cover behind the driver. [1] [2]
