About this detail of the Tiger

The gap above the Tiger's mantlet was protected against shrapnel by three metal bars [1] . They had recessed screws, and they had to be removed if you ever wanted to lift the mantlet out of the turret.

Dragon provide part D14 which is a good representation of these bars. In the earlier Tiger kit releases, this part had no problems. Unfortunately somebody at Dragon had the bright idea of adding a lip to the inside of D14, to hold it in place more firmly.

Since then, it does not sit correctly in the turret roof.

The solution is simple. Cut away the ridge from the roof behind part D14.

Part D14 should appear like this when correctly installed.

For an Early or Initial Tiger, this would be the end of the story. But for all Tigers with the later kind of cupola, there is an identical set of bars below the mantlet as well. Dragon overlooked this until it was too late to correct the tooling. They added the second set as a photo-etch part.

This photo-etch part (MA40) is slightly less accurate than the plastic one, and is too long. You should cut the ends to the correct length.
