THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT

All the photos we know of the engine compartments are with HL 210 P45, this is the first time we can see the engine compartment of a late tiger with a HL 230 P45 engine.

The engine compartment was modified during the production :

Since May 1943, the Maybach HL 210 P45 was replaced by the Maybach HL 230 P45.

Some modifications were made for this new engine: new engine wall, gear boxes for the fans units, cooling circuit, news holes in the rear armour plate...

The compartment was also simplified because a lot of deep fording equipments were deleted  since August 1943.

First, I just put the general views, I will update this page later with detailled areas such as cooling circuit or fuel circuit.

Global views:

right rear armour plates left rear plates  The rear plates, under these plates there is the fans units, the radiators, and the upper fuel tanks, you can have further informations about these parts on David's site .

Through the armoured air intake louvers, you can see the wooden decking introduced in April 1944. This wooden decking is to protect the upper fuels tanks and radiators from shell fragments .

the first look inside the hatch open First look in the compartment, it seems to be complete and in good condition, of couse there is some rust and a lot of dusts.

The compartment was sprayed with the same green paint than the rest of the interior . There is no room at all in this compartment and most of the times it was necessary to remove the engine to make a repair.

engine compartment note the 2 air filters The HL 230 is fitted with 2 air filters, there was 3 smallers filters on the HL210, these filters are working with oil. You can see the cooling circuit, we will study this circuit in detail later.
note the cooling circuit one air filter can be removed Other global views. One of the 2 filters was not bolted , it was very usefull to take photos and measurements

To be continued ....
