Asymmetric shape of turret
All German tank turrets were asymmetrical in some way, but usually their basic armour plate was not. The Tiger I turret was an exception; its front was considerably wider on one side. Strangely enough, despite the keen interest in the vehicle and the plentiful photographs of it, this fact seems to have been forgotten until I published it in Military Modelling Magazine, June 1994. For that reason, there exist model kits with correctly and incorrectly shaped turrets.

The turret walls are a single piece of 80mm steel plate with curved and straight sections.

The curved part is centered on the turret's rotational axis. The straight parts are tangential.

The forward edge of the armour is positioned relative to the gun's trunnion axis.

In this model, you can see that the forward edges are not cut perpendicularly through the steel plate; they are cut parallel to the trunnion axis.
